| PDP sees environmental disaster in KG hydel project | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 9- Peoples Democratic Party has said the Kishen Ganga hydel project, currently under execution, threatens the delicate environmental balance in the Gurez –Bandipora area and could also result in cultural and ethnic assault on the people of the area.
In a statement the party said the hydro electric projects being constructed in the state whether in the Chenab Valley or Kashmir are resulting in huge environmental disruption, mountain system are getting destabilized and habitation threatened with landslides and land erosion.. This phenomenon, the spokesman said taking place with a disastrous impact on Gurez –Bandipora area.
The statement further said the construction of Dam will threaten many villages in Gurez like Nile, Kanzalwan, Chutiwari, Jilandoora , Baktoor, Wanpora Khufri Badwan and Dawar. This could result in disruption of the life of the Dard tribe in habiting in Gurez valley and cause immense loss to the ethnic diversity of the state. Similarly, the villages of Matrigam, Bunkoot, Pazalpora, Sonarwani, and Chandaji on Bandipora side would get destabilized as a result of heavy blasting of the mountain area, the statement added.
Reiterating the resolve of the party to seek renegotiation of terms with the NHPC the statement said the power giant must take action to ensure that the impact on environment through its construction is limited to the minimum.
