Jammu, Dec 9: In a bid to remove crime from society, the Jammu and Kashmir Police today launched a Short Message Service (SMS) here.

''An initiative has been taken under which the grievances of the people will be looked into and if anybody has a complaint, he can just send an SMS to 9469300300,'' Ashok Gupta, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone told reporters at a press conference this afternoon.

Mr Gupta said that so far the service has been launched in this winter capital and sooner it would also be expanded in other districts of the region.

''The complaints like accidents, terrorists attack, corruption, vehicle thefts, strangers, criminal activities, ragging, women harassment will be entertained through SMS besides many others and swift action will be taken as per the nature of the complaint,'' the IGP added.

The police officer said that this is kind of service is second in the country here as it was earlier introduced in Hyderabad.

''The SMS service is of a unique type, which will be monitored in a different way as the complaint will be saved electronically, sent to the police control room for verification and action as per the directions,'' he added.

The IGP also maintained that action against the person making a hoax complaint would also be initiated.

Besides SMS service, Mr Gupta said new Close Circuit Cameras (CCTVs) are also being installed at all the vulnerable points.

''To maintain surveillance in and around Jammu City, the number of existing 16 CCTVs will be raised to 50,'' soon said the police officer.
