| A quick glance at the crime headlines of the 2009 | | | Shiney 'tainted'
Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was booked for rape charges in June this year. Allegedly Shiney raped a domestic help at his Andheri residence on June 14 2009. The actor's DNA report supported the rape allegations. National Commission for Women intervened and insisted that prima facie Ahuja indeed was guilty of rape. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had the case transferred from Session Court and promised a fast-track trial. Shiney Ahuja was lodged in Arthur Road Jail for little over three months and finally secured bail on October 1. The Bombay High Court granted him bail but not without instructing him to refrain from tampering with evidence and staying in Delhi till conclusion of the trial. A keenly followed case, that is likely to be adjudged by the middle or later half of 2010.
Triple murder in Bangalore
Bangalore woke up to one of the most gruesome murders in recent times in the month of October this year. Interior designer Rahul Das, his wife Pushpalatha and their 8-year-old daughter Agneeshu were found murdered in the bathroom of their home near Ramamurthy Nagar.
Das was found hanging upside down with his head in a bucket of water and his legs tied to the water tap. Bodies of his wife and child were found in the bathtub. The house was locked from outside and according to initial investigations, a love triangle was said to be the motive of the crime. However, after Police made three arrests the line of investigation was modified. It is claimed that the prime suspect Lokesh was a former employee of Das and he is responsible for the killings. The police say that Rahul was alone at home when the killers struck. It is believed that the murderers were still in the house when Rahul's wife and daughter returned from the child's tuition class. The three bodies were only recovered three days after the crime, when the family of the victims could not reach them on phone. They alerted their relatives in Bangalore and only then the triple murder came to light.
The Killer IITian
Pushpam Kumar Sinha, the 34-year-old IIT Delhi scholar confessed to his crime when confronted by the police. Sinha strangled 19-year-old Ramchanphy Hongray after she spurned his repeated advances. Hongray was Sinha's neighbour in south Delhi's Munirka locality. Sinha killed and burnt her body on a gas stove to make the murder look like an accident. Police said that the accused was a 'pervert and maniac' and that he suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder. It seems that Sinha tried to rape the victim and then panicked when the later threatened to hand him over to the police. Sinha strangled her and put her face and upper torso on the gas stove to cover up his crime. It was only after the post mortem report that Sinha was booked for murder and tampering with the evidence.
Hongray was visiting her elder sister in Delhi while Sinha had taken up residence in the same building 25 days ago.
Subsequently police discovered that Sinha had scribbled death and even made an obscene graffiti on the wall in his room.

The city of Mumbai witnessed the shocking murder of Neeraj grover, creative head of Synergy Adlabs in the month of May. Neeraj who was registered 'missing' on 7th May by his parents was brutally murdered by Maria Susairaj, a Kannada film actress and her boyfriend. Popularly termed as the 'love triangle' by many newspapers, Neeraj's murder story seemed to be taken right out of a Bollywood movie. Susairaj, who had earlier acted in 4 kannada movies, wanted to make her mark in Mumbai and used Neeraj for this purpose. The two developed a good relationship and even stayed together at Grover's new apartment at Andheri before the the actress moved to her new flat in Malad. Grover in the meantime, fixed up auditions for Susairaj in a few serials and thus, the two got even closer. Maria's boyfriend Jerome Mathew however didn't quite like his girlfriend's new 'friend'. The night before the murder, Neeraj had gone to Maria's house to 'help her shift into the house'. Mathew was aware of this and asked Maria not to let him stay over. His girlfriend however did not pay heed and the very next morning Mathew came up to the house and found a naked Grover in Maria's bedroom. An argument started between the guys, which ended up in Mathew stabbing Neeraj and killing him. Both Maria and Mathew tried to hide the evidence by re-painting the wall and chopping Grover's body, putting it into plastic bags and burning them. The watchman, who was a key witness to the murder, saw the couple transferring the bags from the house to the car. The police found several discrepancies in Susairaj's statements and after several days of interrogation Maria broke down and confessed everything. She was arrested followed by her boy friend.
Mumbai man with 14 wives
Air India may be cash-strapped, but one of its engineers in Mumbai had 14 wives. Though all the 14 wives lived in different localities, none of them knew of Waghmare's multiple roles. In times of recession and job loss, one may find it difficult to run a family, but Tushar Waghmare Bapat, 40, managed to have 14 wives. You may wonder how he did this. In the first fortnight of the month he would spend money on his wives and in the next his wives would take care of him, as most of them were employed. He used to stay for three days with one wife and then leave saying he is going on a tour. But his multiple-life did not run far. The Mumbai police arrested Waghmare when one of his wives found out the real story. Air India promptly sacked Waghmare.
His modus operandi was the internet. He registered his profile with a marriage portal. His profile read thus: Divorced in 2006, looking out for working Brahmin women. Divorcees or widows no bar. Three of the wives were architects or engineers, and the others homemakers, police said. He however, looked after them well, till his salary ran out. After that, the wives looked after him. Waghmare was caught when one of his wives said she was going on a tour. He promptly told her that she need not hurry to return. Getting suspicious, the lady did not go on tour and a day later returned only to find another lady in her house. Waghmare had checked in with another wife.
The furious lady went to the police and filed a complaint and he was arrested on Aug 18.
Waghmare is now cooling his heels behind bars and has neither his wives nor friends to bail him out. Interestingly nobody turned up to bail out the much married man.
Laveena-Kunal
On February 7th, 2008 South Indian actor Kunal Singh was found dead, hanging from the fan at his residence in Oshiwara, a north-western suburb in Mumbai. The Oshiwara police declared it as a suicide; however matters did not end there. Unsatisfied with the police's decision, Rajendra Singh, Kunal's father, a retired army officer pleaded the Bombay high court to re-investigate the case. It was decided that the case would be looked upon from the very beginning. A doctor conducted the post-mortem and told the court that the death was homicidal. As a result, the police arrested Laveena Bhatia, a close friend and a co-star of Singh's upcoming bollywood movie 'Yogi', who was present at Singh's residence and was the first one to see Singh's body hanging from the fan. She said that she had gone to the bathroom for 20 minutes, after which she saw Singh's body- 'a highly believable story'.
Moreover, polygraph tests conducted on her indicated that she was lying to the police on certain issues related to the murder. The police however, were baffled as they couldn't find any gain in Laveena killing Kunal, on the contrary Kunal and Laveena were going to act in a bollywood movie. Singh's father termed this as a very big conspiracy with many people behind the death of his son. The police however remain completely clueless.
Goa sex crimes
Sex crimes and rapes in Goa have been a perennial problem and this year was no different.The latest crime reported in Goa was of a Russian tourist who accused John Fernandes, a Goan politician of attempting to rape her.
According to the tourist John had given her a lift, promising her that he'd drop her to her hotel. Instead he took her to a lonely spot and tried to rape her. She managed to wrest free and fled back to her hotel in Colva. What was once known as the city of heavenly beaches, tourists now have to think twice before visiting the place, due to an increase in sexual crimes.
Rave party Mumbai, Pune
Pune is quite famous for its rave parties getting busted. In 2008, the Mumbai police detained around 271 people and a number of drug peddlars at a party that took place at the foothills of the Sinhagarh fort. This year it was Shakti Kapoor's son Sidhant, who made the headlines at a rave party, which took place in Juhu's 'Bombay 72 Degrees East' club. Sidhant was supposedly working as a 'disc jockey' in the club. It was one of the biggest parties of the year with people flying all the way from Delhi to attend it. The fun however stopped when the Mumbai Police decided to bust the party and detained 231 youths including Sidhant. The police had earlier recieved information about the possession of illegal drugs and the presence of drug peddlars at the party. They managed to capture 100 capsules of ecstasy along with other drugs like cocain and LSD. Around 8 drug peddlars were also arrested.
