| Jammuites to pay less for pulses, vegs, fruits | | Prices being slashed from Dec 15 | | Early Times Report Jammu Dec 9: Inflation may by countrywide cry but Jammu has a pleasant news to hear -prices of pulses will be slashed by 5 to 10 percent while as that of vegetables and fruits will be reduced by 30 to 40 percent in the coming days. The new rates will be released by the Government by the 15th of this month .
This consumer friendly measure was mutually resolved at a high level meeting of the officers of Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CA&PD) with the representatives of the various trade bodies including, wholesalers and retailers chaired CAPD Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon.
The meeting was convened to device ways and means for checking price increase of various essential commodities in the market. Various trade bodies assured that in wake of over all down trend in the terminal fruit mandies across the country, the rates of different essential commodities will automatically come down.
Akhoon said that Government was committed to provide good quality ration to the consumers, adding that more sale depots are being opened across the State to provide adequate quantity of ration to the consumers. He said that Government has initiated various reforms to streamline the Public Distribution System with focus on checking pilferage and black marketing of ration items and Kerosene.
While seeking support from the traders to help Government in protecting the rights of consumers, the Minister said that every efforts would be made to regulate the market prices. He called for providing feed back and identifying black marketeers and profiteers.
Akhoon said that eight Consumer Courts would be set up at the District Headquarters shortly in the first phase to protect the rights of consumers. He said a law has been enacted to give representative character to the CA&PD in the interest of consumers.
The Minister stressed on displaying the rate lists by vegetable and fruit sellers and ration depot holders and said that licenses of such retailers, wholesalers and dealers would be cancelled, who do not display authenticated rate lists for the consumers.
Responding favorably to the suggestions of the traders, the Minister said issues like exemption from import duty on essentiasls and VAT on cheese would be taken up with the concerned quarters. He said Consumer Councils are being constituted within few days where due representation would be given to various Associations.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Commissioner/Secretary, CA&PD and Transport, Mr. Asgar Ali Samoon, Director CA&PD, Jammu, Mr. Hemant Kumar Sharma representatives of various retailers and wholesalers, Consumer Welfare body, Chamber of Commerce and Industries including President Federation of Retailers Association Jammu, Mr. Yashpal Gupta, senior Vice President of Chambers of Commerce, Mr. Tara Chand, representatives of Fruit and Vegitable Association, Mr. Ashwani Kumar and President Fruit Association, Mr. Veer Ji Raina.
