| Environment panel inspects lakes | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DEC 10: The Environment Committee of Legislative Assembly under the Chairmanship of Mr. Nizam-ud-Din Bhat today conducted on-the-spot inspection of Surinsar and Mansar Lakes to take stock of measures underway for conservation of these water-bodies. The Committee was informed that encroachments on the banks of lake of these lakes are being removed and thrust is being laid for conserving the water bodies and environment. The Committee expressed concerned over the decreasing water level of these lakes and asked for conservation and beautification of the water-bodies. The Committee was also informed that Rs. 55 lakh have been earmarked for construction of parks and bath-rooms in Surinsar. The Committee asked the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu to expedite the process of land acquisition and stressed for boosting eco-tourism which will help preserving environment and will give fillip to tourism. It was also informed that at present some conservation measures have been taken by Wildlife Protection Department which include water shed management, weed removal, de-siltation, fencing, formation of eco-clubs and village committee. The Committee was informed that a Comprehensive Management Plan for the conservation of these two lakes under the Prime Minister’s Package has been prepared for five years. This conservation programme is being implemented since last year. An amount of Rs 6.91 crore has been earmarked by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, for the conservation of these two lakes. An amount of Rs 47.40 lakh was sanctioned during 2008-09, out of which an amount of Rs 38.50 lakh was utilized during this period. The Surinsar-Mansar Development Authority (SMDA) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Soujanya Kumar Sharma, informed the Committee that Rs 4 crore are being spent for the development and renovation of Surinsar Mansar lakes during this financial year. The Committee Members included MLA,s Mr. Rafi Ahmad Mir, Mr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Mrs. Bimla Luthra, Mr. Durga Dass, Mr. Krishan Chander, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Shah, Mr. Sukhnandan Kumar, Mrs. Indu Pawar and Mr. Baldev Raj.
