World Disabled Day observed at MIER College

Jammu, Dec 10- To commemorate World Disabled Day, MIER College of Education through its Department of B. Ed. Special Education (MR) organized a extension lecture on the theme “Constitutional Provisions and Legislation for the persons with disabilities”. Dr. Madhu Singh an eminent educationist with expertise in the field of disability and Principal M.C. Khalsa College of Education was the resource person.
In her thought provoking lecture she made the faculty and the students aware of the constitutional rights and legislative provisions for the disabled persons. She also threw light on Indian Lunacy Act (ILA), Mental Health Act (MHA), Persons With Disability - Act, 1995 (PWD-Act), Rehabilitation Council of India - Act (RCI) and National Trust - Act.
Earlier, welcoming the resource persons Dr. Renu Gupta, the Principal MIER College of Education said that ‘World Disabled Day’ is observed as a world wide effort to focus on the problems confronting the disabled. She said that we should take a pledge to serve the cause of disabled. As special educators and teachers, we should help students with special needs so that they can come up with their maximum abilities, she added.
The students of B Ed Special Education (MR) also prepared charts and posters depicting different kinds of disabilities. This was indeed a great effort for making the students aware about the problems being faced by the disabled persons which was greatly appreciated by the resource person, the staff and the students. Material related to Persons with Disability – Act, 1995 (PWD-Act) was distributed among the staff and students for spreading awareness about the rights of the differently disabled persons.
