| NWC imperative due to failure of NPT: Dr. Mitra | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 11- Dr Arun Mitra General Secretary Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has said that the necessity of Nuclear Weapon Convention (NWC) has become imperative as the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) has become defunct due to the uncooperative attitude of the US administration. Addressing a seminar titled “Health implications of Nuclear Energy” organized under the supervision of Dr SS Soodan at ASCOMS and Hospital, Sidhra, here today Dr. Mitra said that it is a matter of serious concern that there are over 27, 000 nuclear weapons even today on earth. He said as per a hypothetical study up to eight lakh people could be killed and 20 lakh injured if a nuclear bomb falls on Mumbai. The biggest challenge is threat even if the states decide against using the nuclear weapons the danger of these weapons being used by the non state actors is very grave in the present day world. Their accidental use in case of a natural calamity is also real; he said and added that false alarms can also play havoc. It is unfortunate that we in South Asia, which is one of the most deprived region in the world have also fallen trap to the nuclear arms race. The only way to abolish them and prevent such a catastrophe from occurring is to strengthen peace is through mutual dialogue between the neighboring nations.
