| 5th Chopan conference organized in Anantnag | | Govt. committed to improve the lot of backward communities: Taj | | Srinagar, October, 07 – Minister for Animal and Sheep Husbandry Mr. Taj Mohi-u-din has said that Government is making concerted efforts to promote sheep rearing in the state. Addressing the 5th Chopan conference organized by J&K Chopan Welfare Association in collaboration department of sheep Husbandry at Anantnag today, he said there is a need to exploit the available vast potential to enable this community to improve its economy and lifestyle. He said due to the tremendous potential available for this farming huge chunk of population is traditionally associated with sheep rearing including Chopan community. The Minister said that government is committed to assist and develop all the backward communities of the state and various development schemes are underway to improve the welfare of these communities. Mr. Taj however said that until the nomads change their lifestyle and educate their children no one will come to their rescue and they are bound to suffer more. Announcing that the government is contemplating to bring new breed of sheep darpar in the state that gains 35 kg weight in just 4 months he said this breed would be made available to the farmers by the end of April next year. Referring to the import of sheep and poultry for consumption in the state worth millions of rupees from neighbouring states annually he regretted that despite J&K being a Himalayan state with great rearing potential is not able to even fulfill its requirement. Responding to various demands putforth by the speakers of the community on the occasion he assured that their genuine demands would be looked into including giving up ST status to the community at par as other migratory community. Among others General Secretary All India Congress Committee Mr. Abdul Majid Paddar, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Mr Ghulam Ahmad Pir, Director Sheep Husbandry and Mr. O.N. Makoo were present on the occasion. |
