Omar focuses on "improved" police-public relations as JK Police goes UP way
12/11/2009 10:38:30 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 11: ALREADY faced with criticism over the coalition government's recently announced "losely drafted" employment policy, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah now come forward with the idea of "correcting" the state police functioning.
Inaugurating a model police station, the first of its kind in the state, the chief minister coined the hitherto "stale" idea of improving police-public relations, which, of course, have reached a new low due to varied reasons in the past few months.
The idea has been floated by him at a time when the J&K police is going the Uttar Pradesh police way by indulging in all sorts of "wrongdoings". Allegations of land grabings and custodial killings (including that of Rajneesh that allegedly took place in a Srinagar police station a month or so back) are quite common, but taking a huge amount by senior police officers to change weapon of offence in the Amandeep murder case has undoubtedly brought a bad name to the state administration.
So Omar's these utterances hint more at his government's efforts to do police-face cleaning. For the last over a decade now, the state functionaries have been issuing the statements of improving police-public relations, but, on ground, people are still getting harassed by the men in khaki on one pretext or the other. Well-educated and law abiding citizens still prefer to maintain a distance from cops and police stations.
Probably having all these things in his mind, the chief minister asked cops to be people friendly, polite and positive under all circumstances while performing their duties. “Your behavior and attitude towards society have greater impact in developing
substantial police-public understanding and rapport necessary for maintenance of peaceful and tranquil atmosphere”, he added.
He also appreciated the police role in dealing with law and order situations and restoring peace.According to an official sources, the construction of the Model Police Station has been completed at a cost of Rs.45 lakh with in nine months.
Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda, who was also present on the occasion, said one such model police station would be shortly opened at Kothibagh in Srinagar. "Every district will be having a model police station," he added.
He said SMS service with mobile number 9469300300 has also been introduced for registering the complaints in the Gandhi Nagar Model Police Station.
