| Chib inaugurates Prestigious National Symposium on Stroke Update | | Advocates separate university of Medical sciences in J&K | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DECEMBER 12- “Our Medical Institutions are producing Medical Graduates , Post Graduates and Paramedics but still no much attention is being paid by the universities for the development of these institutions, so there should be a separate University of Medical Sciences in J&K”.
This was stated by Minister for Medical and Technical Education, Youth Services & Sports Mr. R.S. Chib on the inaugural ceremony of the Prestigious National Symposium on “Stroke Update” being organized by the Department of Neurology, Government Medical College Jammu today.
While welcoming the participants, from different parts of the country to the City of temples, Mr. Chib said that this symposium will provide an opportunity to the participating specialists to exchange new innovations and researches conducted in different parts of the country and the main thrust of such symposia is to increase the awareness on the stroke symptoms, timely identification of all the risk factors, and to convey updated information in latest methods of stroke treatment, rehabilitation and primary and secondary preventions.
Mr. Chib also informed the August gathering that a Task Force has been constituted under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Omar Abdullah in J&K for the improvement of the health care facilities in state and Dr A.K Nagpal is the convener of that Task Force and recently they had a meeting in which comprehensive discussions were held on the provision of the improved and better medical & healthcare facilities to the people at their door steps, availability of best faculty and excellent working conditions to the doctors etc.
He further added that our norms relating to the promotion prospectus of the doctors are not at par with the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council Of India (DCI) and that may be the reason for the shortage of the best medical faculty in the state and the government is also looking up to implement these norms in the state to meet the paucity of the medical faculty in the state.
Mr. Chib also stated that the two Super Specialty Hospitals coming up in J&K shall be properly equipped with the latest facilities for the treatment of the diseases like brain stroke and other neurological diseases as it will have a separate neurological wing in it and the buildings of these hospitals shall be ready by the March, 2010. Deliberations on the prevention and treatment, modalities of Stroke by various experts from across the country will not only benefit the medical fraternity in particular but also the society as a whole, he added.
Commissioner/Secretary Health & Medical Education Mr. Atal Duloo also spoke on the topic at length and released the souvenir on the: Stroke update” on the occasion.
Dr. S. K. Gupta, Head of the Neurology, GMC, Jammu disclosed that Stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide and is the second leading cause of death. 2/3 of stoke deaths worldwide occur in developing countries including India. With the increase in the age expectancy, the burden of the disease is going to increase further in coming times. In our hospital also, there are approximately 5-7 admissions of stroke per day. It has been seen that an Estimated 5.7 million people died in 2005 and 2/3 of them were from low and middle income countries and by 2015 this will rise to 6.7 million people. In other words, the Global burden of stroke is putting strain on health care services, burden on care givers and economy besides poor quality of life after stroke. About 25% of the patients are disabled because of stroke.
Dr. Nagpal lauded the endeavor of the present coalition government headed by Jenab Omar Abdullah for its enormous efforts in improving the health care system in the state with goal of its universal access.
Among others the inaugural functions was attended by Principal, Government Medical College Dr. Rajinder Singh besides 300 delegates from all over the country.
Earlier Mr. Chib also inaugurated a photo exhibition relating to the activities of the Medical College Jammu and later on a group of students of AMT School Jammu met with the him and demanded an increase in their monthly stipend being provided to them. The Minister heard them patiently and assured them of the favorable action in this regard.
