| CII reaches out to farmers of Jammu | | Increasing population a great challenge to agriculture sector: Dr. Mishra | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 12- CII J&K State Council in collaboration with Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, (SKUAST) Jammu and state Agriculture Department organized one day training session for the farmers from Samba, Jammu & Reasi here today. The session was attended by more than 300 farmers apart from the officers of the line departments. The aim of the training session was to educate the farmers on the latest farming techniques, display of latest irrigation equipment and agriculture related finance/credit schemes. The faculty for the training session apart from the speakers from SUKAST Jammu consisted of eminent speakers from National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM), Jaipur, Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), New Delhi, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development - NABARD and Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, PAU Ludhiana and CSKHPK Palampur.. The mix of speakers from within the states and outside ensured cross pollination of ideas so important for the balanced development of agriculture. Dr B Mishra Vice Chancellor SKUAST Jammu who was chief guest while thanking CII for taking initiative to conduct today’s Agri conclave said that he was very happy to note that the industry was taking keen interest in this very vital economic sector. Today’s gathering of scientists , industrialists , framers and government officials is a rare event and will go a long way in solving the agricultural related issues. Dr Mishra also said that ever since independence our agriculture production has grown over fourteen times which is a record. However, this increased production looked very marginal when compared to the corresponding increase in the population. This increase in population has thrown a big challenge to the agriculture sector. Agriculture conclaves like these where all stakeholders put their minds together need to be done more often. Director agriculture Vinod Bala Sharma complimented CII for choosing very relevant subjects for today’s interaction with the farmers. She said that the soil and climatic conditions of Jammu were very good and in some cases farmers were encashing four crops in one year. Wheat, medicinal crops, saffron, mushrooms, Jeera of Kitshwar district, flowers and fruits have a great potential and the farmers need to exploit the same. However, she said the major problems faced by the farmers were lack of irrigation facilities, lack of fertilizers/ their untimely availability and lack of marketing network. Coupled with this is the problem caused by the delayed/untimely monsoons. She recommended formation of mandis like those in Punjab to facilitate the marketing process. Sanjay Puri Chairman CII J & K in his welcome address exhorted the farmers to feel proud of their profession and not ever sell their land with the view to settle in urban areas. He said if the country has to grow by 9 %, agriculture has to grow at least by 4%. Therefore in order to achieve the desired results the government was taking all necessarily steps to boost the agriculture sector, the benefits of which will definitely reach the farmers, he added.
