| Pak constitutes NCTA to tackle menace of terrorism | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT New Delhi, Dec 13: Pakistan has constituted National Counter Terrorism Authority (NCTA) for tackling the menace of terrorism in the country. This step has been taken following mounting pressure from the American Government. According to reports, Islamabad has also asked the NCTA to have direct rapport with the provincial Governments so that the authorities there got specific reports on the activities of terrorists and initiate remedial measures on time. The Agency, as per the reports from across the border, will gather specific inputs on the hideouts, motives and plans of terrorist groups and share it with security agencies, including the Army. Reports said that Islamabad opted for the NCTA after it found that such agencies were functioning in various developed countries, including the USA, France and Britain. Islamabad has come to realize that its ongoing war against terrorists alone will help the country to ensure stability of the civilian rule. It is in this connection that Islamabad has decided to launch military operations in other areas where the reports indicated that militants have carved out safe sanctuaries. Islamabad claims that its task of freeing South Waziristan of the menace of terrorists had been fulfilled and the Army may be asked to launch operations in other belts. It has claimed success in its operations against the terrorists in the Swat Valley. But intelligence reports have convinced Islamabad that there was no room for laxity in the Swat Valley and in Waziristan because terrorists were trying to regroup in these regions after the troops were withdrawn. Consequently Islamabad has decided to retain some Army battalions in these areas till the threat of resurfacing of the terrorist activities receded completely. In addition to these military operations Islamabad is trying to negotiate with the trouble mongers in Baluchistan and other belts. It has conveyed to the leaders in Baluchistan that Pakistan Government would welcome a peace treaty with them and in case they were not prepared to accept the hand of friendship in the interest of peace and stability Army would be directed to launch operations against them in the way they were launched in South Waziristan and the Swat Valley.
