| A lonely Kashmiri Pandit on bizarre peace process | | | ABID SHAH NEW DELHI, DEC 13: Pandit Bhushan Bazaz is one among those few persons from the Kashmir Valley who supports resolution of the vexed issue of Kashmir by India and Pakistan as per the wishes of majority Muslim population of Jammu and Kashmir that cuts across the borders of the two countries. He believes that this can revive the best ethos of the land allowing both Muslims and Hindus to coexist in peace and harmony despite their terms being vitiated by the demands of politics and rivalry between India and Pakistan and their supporters in the Valley. Thus, Bazaz issued a statement here today that has been immediately picked up by one of the news agencies of Pakistan while back home media remained cold to it. Later, Bazaz confirmed to Early Times that he did issue a Press statement calling upon the people of Kashmir and their leaders to unite and fight at an hour when powerful sections have been trying to evade the issue by creating a divide in the ranks of leaders of the Valley. Asked to identify the sections referred to by him, he said that the Indian Government has been following a policy whereby Kashmir issue has been “lingering” through even as leaders like the late Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammed Farooq, Abdul Gani Lone, and veteran freedom fighter like Maulana Masoodi became victims to unknown assassins’ bullets besides scores of other well meaning intellectuals, scholars and activists perishing at a time when they have been speaking the language of peace. The latest in this series is Fazal Haq Qureshi who is now battling for his life in a Srinagar hospital. Besides, the bizarre incidents taking its toll upon the hope for peace, the Government in New Delhi is able to wriggle out of the process of solving the issue of Kashmir as per the popular wishes of the people represented by their leaders by dividing their ranks. Thus, Bazaz urges upon the people to remain united and expose sinister plots that have been stabbing in the back of the peace process. Asked about New Delhi’s umpteen assertions to go ahead with the peace talks, Bazaz points to the international pressure mainly from USA and UK besides telling to prove the intriguing nature of Kashmir politics that once the National Conference boss, Farooq Abdullah, urged him to do something while he (Bazaz) was staying in a circuit house in order to support Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s wont to boycott the polls. This was before the last general elections when Mirwaiz Umar Farooq issued a call to boycott the last Assembly polls. This helped National Conference in winning as many as eight Assembly seats in a particular area of the Valley where people responded to Mirwaiz’s poll boycott call. As per Bazaz had this not been so, the People’s Democratic Party of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed could have got more seats than that of Farooq Abdullah’s party that formed the Government in the State in alliance with the Congress. Bazaz is thought to be a close confidant of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and this disclosure proves the level of distrust that afflicts Kashmir’s politics vis-à-vis officially recognised parties and separatist Hurriyat though the two continue to have behind the scene interaction. Bazaz said that he was appalled by the recent attempt on the life of Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Qureshi and wished for his speedy recovery.
