| GEELANI 'DISMISSES' ARMY CHIEF'S STATEMENT, CONDEMNS PEOPLES LEAGUE LEADER SOPORI'S RE-ARREST | | | SRINAGAR, Oct 07, 06 Dismissing the reported statement made by the Indian Army Chief J J Singh that 'mistakes committed by troops do take place but only as aberrations, not as a routine in Kashmir' at Uri on Friday, the chairman of a faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday said that "top officials give Indian troops clear directions to make these mistakes and commit atrocities day in and day out to terrorize hapless freedom loving Kashmiri people". "Since last 58 years India has unsuccessfully tried to suppress voices of freedom here and in the last 17 years she has tried every trick in her kitty but has miserably failed in the designs to break our resolve. And history stands witness to the fact that in the battles between truth and falsehood, the truth has always emerged triumphant," Mr Geelani–who was placed under house arrest by the State Police for the sixth time since last month–told journalists at his Hyderpora residence today. If "India and her forces", Geelani said, think they can break "will of Kashmiris" they are living in a "fool's paradise". Geelani expressed concern over the act of re-arresting chairman of a faction of Peoples League–a constituent of Geelani-led Hurriyat–Ghulam Mohammad Khan Sopori, who he said, quoting Sopori's family members, was arrested by Special Operations Group. "His (G M Sopori's) whereabouts are unknown. We as freedom fighters don't worry about detentions and killings but what is the justification behind arresting a person and then not disclosing his whereabouts?" he questioned. Terming Sopori a dedicated "resistance" leader, he said the man is suffering from serious back problem due to which he can hardly offer prayers. "We're concerned about his safety more than his family members are. I know him for the last 50 years. He is perhaps the most dedicated activist of freedom movement," he said while deploring Sopori's arrest in strong words. "At least inform us about Sopori's whereabouts," Geelani demanded. Geelani also condemned the CRPF action and alleged use of force to "terrorize" people who he said wanted to bury bodies of militant duo killed in the 27-hour long encounter in Srinagar. He added that peaceful protests in support of Mohammad Afzal Guru will continue in every nook and corner of Kashmir Valley . |
