| J&K MPs rake up prepaid cell phone issue in Parliament | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT
New Delhi, Dec 14 : A strong demand was today made in the Lok Sabha for restoration of pre-paid mobile phones in Jammu and Kashmir as the ban order affected 92 per cent users, including security forces.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mirza Mehboob Beg (NC) said Jammu and Kashmir was the only state where the ban had been imposed.
"92 per cent of mobile users use pre-paid connections. Due to this decision, over 20,000 youth have been rendered jobless in the State.... Majority of security forces were using the pre-paid connections. They have lost contact with their dear ones," Beg said.
The NC member said this had sent a "very wrong signal" and it was only serving the vested interest of some people.
Stating that the users were being punished due to this decision, Beg said Government should break this nexus.
NC Chief and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah shared the views of his party colleague and assured the House that he would take up the matter with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and ask him to discuss the issue with Home Minister P Chidambaram.
Lal Singh, Congress member from Udhampur, alleged that land of poor farmers had been taken away without paying them any compensation to install mobile connection towers in Jammu and Kashmir.
