| Academy hosts rare winter treat | | Six-day Folk Music, Dance festival begins at Abhinav Theatre | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 15- Six day long folk music and dance festival began at Abhinav Theatre here today. The event began with Geetru performances by Rumalo Ram and party followed by Haran dance by Teg Ram and party. The Bhangra, Jindua and Malwai Gidha folk dances of Punjab were also staged on the inaugural day of the festival. The event, which saw large scale participation of people from diverse fields of life, will continue till December 21. One of the prominent highlights of the festival will be the performances of artistes from Uttarakhand and Punjab. Several prominent literary personalities attended the inaugural function. AK Angurana, Principal Secretary to Government, PHE Department was the chief guest while Additional Secretary Cultural Academy Savita Bakshi presented the welcome address. In her welcome address Bakshi said that folk music and dance forms were an integral part of states cultural ethos and the Cultural Academy and North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala would continue to organize such festivals in future also so that the folk traditions of the state would remain alive. Complimenting the Cultural Academy for organizing such events, Angurana said that folk music and dance played an important role in the development of culture in India. Congratulating the Cultural Academy he hoped that such type of programs would be organized in future also so that new generation could be introduced with the folk traditions of the land. The week long festival will see performances by myriad artistes of repute. Main performances would include Dogri folk music by groups led by maestros and well known artistes Ghulam Mohammed, Dhian Singh, and Mohan Lal. The folk dances like Geetru, Haran and Chajha will also be performed by groups led by Rumalo Ram, Teg Ram and Dhani Ram. The Bhaderwahi Kud dance, Punjabi, Gojri, Pahari and folk dance performances of Uttarakhand will also be presented during the six day long music and dance festival.
