LeT's Raju was a master of disguises: DGP
Police claims arrest of mastermind behind Srinagar serial blasts.
7/22/2006 7:09:50 PM
SRINAGAR, July 22: Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Gopal Sharma on Saturday afternoon claimed the arrest of wanted Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Mudasir Gujri alias Raju–the alleged mastermind behind recent tourist attacks and serial grenade blasts on April 14 and July 11 this year in Kashmir valley, and announced a cash reward of rupees three lakh on the head of another LeT man whom Police identified as Haneef alias Haneef Bengali.
"Mudasir Gujri alias Raju has been arrested. He was involved in the attack on Youth Congress rally on May 21 and serial grenade blasts in Srinagar on April 14 and July 11 during the current year," Sharma claimed during a crowded press conference here today at Police headquarters.
Mr Sharma, however, did not divulge details about how and when Gujri was arrested. And, as of now, he categorically denied any links between Srinagar and Mumbai blasts.
Since last week though the news about Mudasir's arrest was making rounds, but, there were conflicting reports about his arrest. Some news channels reported that he was arrested while few newspapers reported that the look-alike (prototype) of Mudasir has been apprehended. With police's announcement today the confusions regarding Mudasir's arrest-drama stand over.
The DGP informed that during interrogation it became known to Police that Mudassir is a local boy and not Pakistani national.
"He (Mudasir) is a master of disguises and speaks various languages, especially Punjabi. A school drop-out Mudasir was the main organizer behind attacks and would receive instructions from one Abu- Alqama, a top
Pakistan based LeT commander, who looks after J&K operations," he said.
After Raju, Police said that Haneef Bengali looks has taken the command of LeT operations. "As far as our investigations are concerned Haneef Bengali alias Faheem is also a local boy and our efforts to nab him are on," he said.
Police said that Raju–known by many names like Rafiq, Mudasir, Abu Umar and Abu Akeel, was motivated by Abu Osama of Pakistan in 1999 to join LeT and was taken to Pakistan via Hill Kaka in Poonch where he spent about four years to receive arms and operation training.
"Raju has been a leading armed commander in coordinating, organizing and actually ensuring militant activities in Kashmir, especially in Srinagar. He has been directly responsible, and has taken part in, multi-targeted grenade attacks in Srinagar city on April 14 and July 11," Police said.
Police also claimed that Raju was the kingpin in organizing Fidayeen attack on the Youth Congress rally in Sher-e-Kashmir Park on May 21 this year.
According to DGP, Gopal Sharma, Abu Alqama from Pakistan camp would issue direct instructions to Raju that Hindu pilgrims and tourists be targeted.
Reminding about a recent assault on Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani by Shiv Sena activists in Jammu region, the DGP said that Abu Alqama had issued instructions to Raju of "Badla Lena Hai" (We have to take revenge)," Sharma said
