| High command least bothered as Congress remains disarrayed | | | Early Times Report
Jammu Dec 16: Despite a brief intervention from the top leadership, the Congress structure in Jammu and Kashmir continues to be in a state of disarray as the party high command is not initiating steps to coax up the warring factions.
Last months, on repeated complaints from the loyalists, there was a brief intervention which made some dissidents to lay low for a while but the party leadership and the organizational office bearers, like AICC general secretary, are making no effort to streamline the J&K unit of Congress. The high command, insiders say, instead of defusing the crisis the tussle between the dissidents, led by the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief Saif-ud-Din Soz, continues to ignore the matter for now.
Party sources however informed that a fortnight ago it seemed the loyalists have taken the upper hand after senior party functionaries from the state met Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and apprised her of the activities of the dissidents. ‘And even in two re three occasions both sides were seen sharing the seats together but the things once seemed to be transitory only, sources said.
But the latest reports said that Sonia Gandhi continues to bank of Ghulam Nabi Azad and she has not, so far initiated any action against those fuelling infighting in the congress in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the loyalists have again conveyed their dismay over the anti-party activities of the dissidents to the Congress high command. Couple of senior congress leader today said "we are perturbed over the style of the two senior Congress leaders including GM Saroori holding cabinet berths." They said both these ministers are even indulged in misusing their official machinery for introducing those Congressmen to public who were defeated in the previous election and had no public support.
One of the ministers, from loyalist bench said that one of the two dissident ministers often organise public rallies and meeting and carries defeated party men to these functions to gain popularity. He said that the this minister needs to hold these functions in collaboration with the Congrss ministers instead of holding these for defeated or disgruntled elements.
He said this man had no right to be the cabinet rank when all the congress ministers except Saroori to be in the camp of loyalists.
Inside reports said that the senior functionaries of the Pradesh Congress Committee have started preparing a performance note of each Congress ministers. The PCC functionaries have been interacting with the people in order to assess their reaction in favour or against the congress ministers. Reports on their performance, misuse of official machinery, on corrupt practices, including favouritism and nepotism were being tabulated and the same would be sent to the party high command.
Sources also said that the party high command is also looking for collecting details on the performance of each Congress minister. And once the high command is not satisfied with the performance of a particular minister he/she may either be dropped or his portfolio may be changed so that he receives the first warning.
The loyalists have also conveyed to the party high command that the activities of the dissidents had encouraged the National Conference leadership in taking the Congress ministers and even the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz for a ride.
They have said that if the dissidents were not forced to fall in line with the loyalists the party may face severe erosion in Jammu and Kashmir.
