Randhir for PPP in agriculture sector
12/18/2009 12:42:39 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: Public –private partnership (PPP) can work through amalgam of strategies like privatization of ownership, privatization of responsibility and privatization of précising facilities. A combination of these strategies can work in Agriculture sector.
Former minister Thakur Randhir Singh has said that that public private partnership in the domain of agriculture should not be limited only to marketing but cover whole range of activities including production of some selected items of products. All resources of the country and scientific knowledge and technology will have to be utilized to give boost f\to farm productivity and production to improve the socio economic conditions of the farming community which has remained neglected in the past over six decades. Despite tremendous losses made in the realm of science and technology but it is an irony that the benefit of such breakthrough has not reached the farmers who constitute nearly 80% population of the country.
While several sectors of economy are progressive by leaps and bounds but many of the farmers are still restoring to suicides because of indebtness, poverty and hunger. He said it is the duty of everyone to come to the rescue of the farming community so that on one hand the holistice progress of the country is ensured and on the other the farmers to get empowered.
There is no denying that the greater focus has to be on private sector involvement and investment in the marketing and food processing, but to ensure quality and greater focus on regional balance, the need of the hour is to ensure enhanced investment in dryland areas, which account for poor and malnourished population.
