| National highway reopens | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 17 : Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the lifeline of the Kashmir valley, was restored this morning after remaining suspended for about six hours due to slippery road conditions following heavly snowfall. Traffic on the highway was allowed from both sides after improvement in the weather condition shortly before noon, a traffic police official told UNI here. He said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials and passengers, were allowed to move towards their respective destinations after receiving a green signal from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the only road link between the valley and rest of the country. Traffic on the highway was stopped following about six inches of snowfall near Jawahar tunnel, the highest point on the road, which had became slippery. The snowfall had stopped and vehicles are moving smoothly, he said. The people in the Kashmir valley mainly depend upon this road as all essentials from a chick to rice, vegetables, meat, chicken and atta come through this route from other states. However, an alternative to the highway was being constructed which will be ready early next year for traffic.
