EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 20: Rich tributes were paid to sepoy Mukesh Chand, who was killed Saturday in firing from across the Line of Control (LoC) on Kranti-1 forward post in Krishna Ghati sub-sector of Poonch, at Paloura-situated BSF Headquarters here today.
Mukesh was on guard duty at the forward post when he had come under sudden fire from across the LoC at about 10.30 am. Sepoys S. Gagoi and Pawan Kumar, who were beside him, were also hurt. While Gagoi and Pawan were admitted to Military Hospital, Poonch, the critically injured Mukesh was referred to the Military Hospital, Jammu, where he died soon after his admission. A bullet had pierced through his stomach. He hailed from Mathura.
His body was kept at the Paloura-situated BSF Headquarters where rich tributes were paid to him by BSF officers and jawans. IG BSF (Jammu Frontier) A K Sarolia and DIGs P S Sagwan and Vasudevan laid wreaths on his body.A BSF spokesman said the body was despatched to New Delhi by Pooja Express at about 6 pm. It would be received by BSF personnel in Delhi tomorrow morning when it reached there, he added.
He said from Delhi, the body would be despatched his home at Mathura in a BSF vehicle. The cremation would take place Monday with full military honours, he added.Soon after the three jawans were hit by bullets, the other jawans manning the post returned the fire. The intermittent firing between the two sides had continued for about 15 minutes. There was no report of any casualty on the Pak side.
Police sources said Pak troops had resorted to unprovoked firing to help infiltration. Small arms were used in the firing that had come from a nullah ahead of the Pak Taku Post towards the LoC, the sources added.
Quoting intelligence inputs, sources said over a hundred militants were camping in the Pak forward posts in wait for an opportune moment to cross over to this side of the LoC. A round-the-clock vigil was being maintained to foil any infiltration bid by them, the sources added.
