| PHQ "silent" over IGP's role in issuance of SIMs to the 26/11 attackers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT ------------------ JAMMU, Dec 21: The state police administration is yet "silent" over the alleged role of a senior J&K cadre IPS officer in making clandestine arrangements for making available SIM cards of different mobile phone companies to some people, said to be close to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The IPS officer, who is of the rank of IGP, was under the scanner of various intelligence agencies after Pakistani militants had struck country's financial capital, according to police sources. He was at present on deputation to New Delhi. Apart from him, some other senior police officers were also under the scanner, the sources added. Sources said the IGP's name had figured during the course of investigation into the Mumbai terror attacks by the Mumbai Crime Branch. A report in this regard was flashed to the state police headquarters in September this year, the sources added. Sources said as in September, much embarrasment had already been caused to the state police due to the involvement of SSP Manohar Singh (Now in jail) in the fudging of evidence and change of weapon of offence in the infamous Amandeep murder case, the police headquarters preferred to keep mum on the IGP's case to avoid further embarrasment. More than two months had passed since then, but the police administration was yet undecided over the fate of the IGP's case. Initiation of an indepth probe was also recommended against the IGP to find out the facts in the case, the sources added. The IGP was transferred outside the state and given an "(in)significant" posting by the state cabinet in a reshuffle ordered by it on September 19. Sources said at least eight sim cards had allegedly been issued through a close associate of the IGP to those who were said to be closely associated with the Mumbai attackers. Sources said the IGP's move to get a posting in National Investigation Agency (NIA) was also stalled at the instance of the Mumbai crime branch. The IGP had remained in controversy as SSP also when his personal security officer (PSO) was caught in Srinagar for his alleged involvement in the smuggling of AK assault rifles. The PSO, who was arrested and put behind the bars, was now dead.
