| Workshop on Earthquake Risk Reduction held | | | Early Times Report Jammu, December 22-The Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, Mr. R.S. Chib today said that the Disaster Management Department of the Jammu University would be further strengthened and broadbased to sensitize masses, particularly students about preparedness and various precautions in the wake of natural and man-made disasters like earth quakes, volcanoes, cyclones, tsunamis and unfortunate IED blasts which occur suddenly without pre information. The Minister was addressing one-day workshop on Earthquake Risk Reduction, organized by Disaster Management Centre, University of Jammu under United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Urban Earth Quake Vulnerability Reduction Programme at Jammu University, Jammu today. Chib said that State’s Disaster Management Cells at State Divisional and District levels would also be strengthened to make these responsive to meet unforeseen challenges in the wake of disasters. . Chib hoped that deliberations at the workshop would prove fruitful and suggested that the recommendations of the experts at the workshop should be published. The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, who was guest of honour, on this occasion, said that Jammu Division is in Zone 04 whereas Kashmir Division falls in zone 05 as far as high risk of earthquake is concerned. He said since earthquake cannot be predicted, the Government is organizing several workshops in which engineers, masons, architects, medical fraternity and other allied persons are provided awareness about the effects of earthquakes and other natural calamities. Acting Vice Chancellor, Jammu University and Dean Academic Affairs Prof. N.A. Ganai, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Mr. Pawan Kotwal, Director Disaster Management Department, Prof. G. M. Bhat, Registrar Jammu University, Prof. P.S. Pathania, Dean, Prof. T.S Tara and Coordinator of the Workshop, Prof. Ram Bushan Singh were present on the inaugural session. State Training Coordinator, NRHM, Dr. Nirupam Madaan also attended the workshop.
