| Crime rate up, militancy down in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 22 : The crime rate has gone up over the years in the Kashmir valley where the incidents of militancy-related violence have come down. Admitting that the crime rate has increased in the Kashmir valley, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range Farooq Ahmad said ''a number of reasons are responsible for it''. He said the rate of social crimes, suicides, drug abuses and domestic violence has increased but the militant violence has come down over the years. Mr Farooq said irregular inhabitation, crosss district and inter district migrations are also responsible for the increase in the crime rate. Besides, he said, the life standard of the people has changed which was also responsible for crimes, he said, adding the police department has taken a number of measures to detect and prevent the crime and punish the criminals. He admitted that the image of police department is not different against the other state government offices and departments. Mr Farooq said that the functioning of the police department was affected due to militancy like other departments of the state. The police chief in Kashmir said during the past years, police department has again started service training courses to keep the personnel informed about the white color and cyber crimes. ''We do not want to remain behind criminals, he said, adding that every effort is being made to control the crimes in the valley. Mr Farooq admitted that the state police enjoys more powers than its counterpart in other states in the country.
