| Coldest night in Kashmir with minus 3.4 degree | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 23 : People in the Kashmir valley experienced coldest night of the winter so far when the minimum temperature dipped to minus 3.4 degrees Celsius this morning, resulting in freezing of water taps in some areas in the outskirts. However, Ladakh region remained cold with mercury dipping between minus 9 degrees to minus 25 degree while Pahalgam in the valley was the coldest with minimum recorded to minus 6.6 degrees. After a brief relief from the chill when the minimum and maximum temperatures were above normal in the valley due to snowfall on upper reaches last week, the dry and open weather during the past 72 hours has again resulted in severe cold. The weather office spokesman said here that due to clear weather during night, the temperature are down. It was the coldest night in summer capital, Srinagar, and its outskirts this morning when the temperature dipped to minus 3.4 degree, lowest so far during this winter. However, earlier lowest was minus 3.1 on December 8. Water taps in many areas, including Tailbal, Harwan, Soura, Sadapora, Gujjarpatri and Dhara were also frozen. However, they melted as the day progressed. Official sources said there were no traces of Western Disturbances (WD), which originates from Arabian sea and enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan. The WD were mainly responsible for snow and rains in this part of the region, they said. They said there was no snowfall or rain in any part of the valley during the past 24 hours which had resulted in drop in the temperature because of cold winds. Snow or rainfall occured only when the temperature was "plus" besides there were WD, they said adding under the present circumstances when there were no WD and the temperature is minus, there is very remote possibility of snowfall or rains during the next 24 hours.
