| ED blast rocks IB; five BSF men hurt | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 26:
In an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, believed to be the handiwork of militants camping in the forward Pak posts, five BSF personnel were injured near the International Border (IB) at Manguchak in Samba sector, about 50 km from here, this morning.
This is the second IED blast on the IB in 41 days. On November 16, BSF DIG O P Tanwar was killed in an IED blast near the Ballar forward
outpost in Ramgarh sub-sector of Samba. That time also, the IED was reported to have been planted by the Pak-based militants.
This is the latest strategy of militants. Unable to infiltrate due to increased vigil on the IB, they, on two occasions, came close to the border fencing taking cover of the dense sarkanda (a type of long grass), planted the IEDs and then fled back to Pak territory without being seen by the BSF patrols on this side of the fence. The sarkanda area is almost unmanned.
A senior police officer said the IED, which exploded at Manguchak today, was planted by the Pak-based militants last night. There was no reason for denying it as none from this side could visit the sarkanda-covered Indian land across the fence at night, he added.
He said BSF jawans, led by a Headconstable, were carrying out searches near the second line of fence at Manguchak when they spotted the IED at about 8.40 am. when one of them tried to examine it with a bomb-detecting stick, it went off, injuring him and four others.
Two of them sustained minor splinter injuries while the remaining three were wounded critically.
The seriously injured BSF men -- Headconstable Ashok Kumar of Ghaziabad, C P Shukla of Madhya Pradesh and Ranja Kumar of Bihar -- were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here.Soon after the explosion, security forces were rushed to the spot and laid a cordon around Manguchak and its adjoining areas. All the entry and exit points were sealed and civilian movement was banned.
A massive search operation was on in the area when reports last came in tonight, the officer added. |
