| Sainik Colony upsets Param FC in tie-breaker | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, December 27: Equally good sides of Sainik Colony Club and Param FC, playing the opening match of the 4th Chritsmas Gold Cup Football Tournament, entertained the crowd before the game decided in tie breaker at the GGM Science College ground, here today.
Though the young and energetic side of Param FC took the first lead netting the ball in the very eighth minute through Tafazul Irshad, yet they lost the game in the tie-breaker 4-2.
The early lead taken by Param FC was equalised by the Sainik Colony when Vinod Kumar struck in the 38th minute bringing the score on board 1-1. It was followed by an interesting battle between the two sides for a winning goal but their efforts go waste in view of strong defence raised by both the sides.
Later, in the tie-breaker, which witnessed Sainik Colony emerging the winners, Param FC could net only two penalty kicks as against four by Sainik Colony.
From Sainik Colony, Vinod Kumar, Rashpal Singh, Vivek and Mohinder Singh were the successful shooters while Stenzin and Udit Sharma could only convert their kicks into net from Param FC. Dilbahadur Gurang kicked the ball out while Tafazul Irshad failed to give the goal-keeper a dodge.
Earlier, Minister for Sports, Health and Medical Education, R S Chib declared the tournament open. Speaking to the participants and other distinguished gathering, Minister reiterated government resolve to improve the sports infrastructure in the state.
Before the chief guest addressed the gathering, Rev Sohan Lal, Pressbyter Incharge CNI Church, Residency Road Jammu prayed for the success of the fortnight long competition. He lauded the efforts of the organizers for making the event a regular feature.
President of the All J&K Christian Welfare Association, organizers of the tournament, former MLC, S M Gill presented a brief note of the knock-out event.
Prominent among others present were president, J&K Football Association (JKFA), Jameel Thakur, secretary, SA Hamid and treasurer, R K Kohli as also Sports Officer, State Sports Council, Arun Sharma and district officer, Rajan Sharma. Nico Dimas of Sheila Builders was guest of honour in the opening function.
The opening match was officiated by Nazir Ahmed (chief referee), R K Singh and Kamaljeet Singh (assistant referees) and Mohd Shafi.
