Manda sanctuary presents shabby picture; exposes tall claims

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 27- Contrary to the big proposals to upgrade the Manda wild life sanctuary and import more animal breeds to attract tourist population to the exotic locale on the outskirts of Jammu city very little effort has been made by the concerned authorities to maintain the ecological balance and cleanliness inside the sanctuary.
A routine visit to the wild life sanctuary is enough to puncture the tall claims of the wild life department. Starting from the entry gate when visitors are asked to buy their tickets they are thrown inside the jungle without informing them anything else or providing any guide for the detour of the sanctuary.
If visitors demand some literature they are told to get in touch with the higher authorities instead of handing them handbills or if at all any literature is available with details of animals, bird species and other varieties. Though sign boards have been erected in front of enclosures but a comprehensive handbill or pamphlet has not been prepared to distribute among visitors. Randomly, even the visitors are not provided with any paper ticket despite charging ticket per head.
Walk a few steps down the foot path a bunch of rabbits’ welcome you locked inside un- cleaned area which paints a shabby picture at the first step. After few steps on the left hand side you can spot few ducks, geese and swans swimming in to and fro to entertain eager visitors. Next a lone porcupine welcomes you before you take a peep inside the enclosure of the National bird, Peacock.
Interestingly, not a single dustbin has been kept inside the sanctuary and majority of visitors can be spotted throwing litter in open in the absence of any 'use me' dustbin. There are several bamboo huts but in first look it is clear that they were not being maintained by the authorities and have left unattended for long time. As visitors approach leopard enclosure they end up expressing their sympathy for the royal animal as they have been kept in shabby conditions. There are several other animals such as bear, spotted deer and others kept in their natural habitat and attract visitors but the foot path leading to their enclosure was choked as leaking water pipes had lead to accumulation of water. It may be mentioned that no extra efforts have been made to attract visitors by bringing in new animals and creating space for them for the promotion of wild life sanctuary and earn more revenues.
