JAMMU, Dec 27:
In the first such incident of its kind in the area, a 60-year-old woman and her daughter-in-law were murdered by a youth in the forests of Doda district after they resisted his alleged moves to outrage their modesty.
The double-murder, which sparked off strong protest in the area, took place in Kothi Puneja forests of Thathri in Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda this afternoon.
Police sources said Gomti Devi (60) and Reeta Devi (25), both residents of remote Kothi Puneja village in Thathri, left home for the forests in the morning to collect wirefood.
Rohit Sharma, a local youth who works as a servant of a village landlord, had also gone to the same forests to collect firewood. In the forests, he saw Gomti and Reeta.
Sources said finding the women all alone, he tried to get intimate with Reeta while constantly teasing Gomti. The two women objected to it and strongly resisted his advances. They also threatened him of dire consequences if he did not stop harassing them sexually.
The verbal duel between them led to a quarrel. In a fit of anger, Rohit then attacked them with the sharp-edged weapon he was carrying to cut tree branches, the sources added.
Sources said he attacked Gomti on the head and Reeta on the neck as a result of which both of them died. Rohit later fled the spot. The bodies were seen lying there in a pool of blood by other villagers who happened to pass from there in search for firewood. Sources after these villagers brought the matter to the notice of Thathri Police Station at about 1.45 pm, a police team was despatched to the site. The team had not returned to the police station till late tonight, the sources added. Sources said Rohit was on the run and had not been arrested. Police have registered a murder case against him. The incident showed that he was maniacal about sex, the sources added.
