In the report recently sent to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Working Group headed by Justice Sageer Ahmed has recommended restoration of greater autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, almost on the lines of National Conference manifesto. These recommendations have been strongly resented by many groups including those in Kashmir Valley.
Among the groups opposed to recommendations, Panthers Party took lead of announcing a shut down which was supported among others by Jammu Bar Association, Jammu State Morcha, Shiv Sena and some trade organizations. Surprisingly, the BJP has not supported the shutdown even as it opposed the recommendations.
The shutdown evoked a mixed response in almost all parts of city while reports coming in from Udhampur suggested near total impact of bandh. In Jammu, shops and business establishments remained shut since morning and passenger vehicular traffic remained off roads. At several places like Janipur, Kachi Chhawani and Bikram Chowk minor clashed between Police and the protesters were seen.
Panthers party activists were seen zooming in different parts of Jammu to ensure complete bandh and at time they were seen virtually requesting to traders to close their business establishments. The JKNPP State President and MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia was also seen appealing common public to ensure bandh a successful. However private vehicles and public transporters plied on the city roads but in less numbers.
Responding to the Bandh call of different political outfits against the report on State-Centre relations, Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) held protest demonstration here at Newplot and observed Bandh there. The protesters were raising slogans against the ‘Kashmir Ki Gulami Se Azad Karo, Kashmir Ki Gulami Se Azad Karo, Delimitation Lagu Karo, UPA Sarkar Hai Hai’.
By around afternoon markets started returning to normal and passenger vehicles came back on the roads. However, little later some Panthers Party activists tried to stage a sit in on the Tawi Bridge to block traffic on either sides of the town. It was at this stage that clashed broke out between party activists and Police. Situation was defused after some time.
