| Farmers rue seeds, fertilizers shortage | | |

Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Tehrik, Jammu today staged day-long protest outside the office of Divisional Commissioner Jammu demanding early distribution of fertilizers and seeds to the farmers. Shouting slogans against the ruling dispensation, the protestors demanded provision of fertilizers and seeds through cooperative agencies, implementation of crop insurance scheme, 4 per cent interest on loan, issuance of passbooks regarding land records of farmers and subsidy on life saving drugs. Kishore Kumar, president of the organisation, said that the farmers’ community has been subjected to hardships due to neo-liberal economic policies of the successive governments in the state since 1990. He exhorted the state government should ensure timely provision of fertilizers and seeds for farmers of the state, preferably through cooperative departments to avoid sub-standard quality. He said that the government should take immediate measures to check the prices of essential commodities and medicines. Sohan Lal Sharma, Sham Prashad Kesar, regional secretary CPI (M), Jammu, Om Prakash, Dharam Singh, Mandev Singh, Mangat Ram and Brita Ram also addressed the protesting farmers.
