| Congress ‘high command’ may embark on all out action in J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 29: Hitherto it was the story of "act or not to act"against the dissidents in the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Now it is the story of adopting tough postures against those trying to foment dissentions in the party. This has become evident from the statements issued by the AICC General secretary and incharge congress in Jammu and Kashmir, Prithvi Raj Chavan, and the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, during a function in Jammu on Monday. Commenting on the warning dished out by Chavan to the dissidents senior party leaders today said that the rebels have been told in clear terms either to quit or to fall in line with the loyalists. They said that the party high command was contemplating action against the dissidents and it may even go to the extent of either changing the portfolios of the ministers, who are in the dissident camp, or dropping them from the cabinet. Prior to Chavan's visit to Jammu reports had already reached the Congress high command in Delhi on the activities of the dissidents who, invariably, boycotted the official functions. And the senior functionaries in the AICC had told Chavan to convey a warning to the dissidents during his Jammu visit. That he did his job is evident from his speech in which he said that nobody "is above the party whether any minister or others sitting on various posts. "He advised the dissidents to sink the differences through talks failing which a tough line will be taken against those working against the intertests of the party. The PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, who hitherto had adopted a submissive role vis-a-vis the dissidents, felt emboldened by the stance taken by Chavan. In his speech he expressed his ire against ministers, belonging to the dissident camp,by saying that "nobody whether ministers,Deputy Chief Minister or others holding important posts are above party."He too emphasised the need for forging unity. Reports said that dissidents had read the writing on the wall and it is in this context that they explained that their function at Banihal had been fixed earlier as they were keen to spread the message of the congress to the far flung areas of the state.Earlier whenever the dissidents either held a parallel function or boycotted the official function they never bothered to adopt defensive postures. Senior party functionaries said,in reply to a question, that the Congress high command was aware of the role of the union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad,in providing some sort of patronage and encouragement to the dissidents. They said that if Azad was keen to project himself as the lone leader of the congress in Jammu and Kashmir he could be appointed as the PCC Chief and in his place Soz could be installed as the Union Health Minister.Similarly those ministers in Jammu and Kashmir who continued to be in the dissident camp would be either shown the door or their powers will be clipped. These party functionaries said that the Congress high command had received reports that with growing indiscipline and the problem of conflict between the loyalists and the dissidents the party had started suffering erosion.Number of Congress workers in the state had joined either the National Conference or the PDP and to check this drift the high command may take firm action against the dissidents
