| Mehbooba raps invisible government for price rise | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 30- Resolving to raise the level of its activities throughout the state to focus on the failure of the state government to provide basic amenities to the people, the Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has said ‘the government has almost become invisible throughout the state’. Addressing a meeting of district and zonal presidents and other office bearers of Kashmir division, in which senior leaders including Tariq Hameed Karra participated, Mehbooba alleged that the government was trying to keep itself in news only through phony press statements, Photo opportunities and ribbon cutting of projects that were executed by the previous coalition government. Mehbooba said power situation in the state had worsened after the present government took over and has now reached 2002 level. She said it seems no body was in charge of government as the ministers made announcements about improvement in power scenario which was followed up by the department with increased curtailments. Even the curtailment program given by PDP was not followed she said and added the rural areas were worst hit as electricity there remained off for weeks together. She said the announcement made about creating a transformer bank proved yet another false promise by the government as many villages were reeling under darkness because of damaged transformers. Scarcity of rations had created a famine like situation in most areas. Food grains, sugar and kerosene oil had virtually vanished from government depots and the people had to come on streets to fight for routine services expected of a government, she said and added that it was beyond comprehension as to what had happened to rations or power supply within only a few months of the present government assuming office. Referring to the steep rise in prices, PDP President said it seemed price control was nobody’s business. She said the sharp increase in prices of edible and essential commodities had broken the back of common people and government was busy doing nothing about it. Mehbooba asked the party functionaries and office bearers to channelize the problems of the people peacefully within the democratic system and make them aware of their rights. She said the party must oppose all strong arm methods of the government to silence the people’s voice and should lead the struggle for rights from the front. The meeting also reviewed the membership drive currently going on and it was decided to speed up the drive and try to enlist all sections of society and especially youth and women
