| Police resorts to cane charge to disperse agitating PDD daily wagers | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 31 Hundreds of agitating daily wage employees of Power Development Department (PDD) were cane charged in this winter capital while they were marching towards Civil Secretariat here. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesting Power development Department (PDD) daily wagers at below Gumat area here today when the protestors tried to take out a rally from Canal Road to Civil Secretariat. Several protesting PDD daily wagers received minor injuries in the police action when the protesting daily wagers tried to march towards Civil Secretariat in Jammu here today, an eyewitness said. The PDD daily wagers who were on indefinite strike for last one month in support of their demand of regularization onto their services today marched to civil secretariat under ‘Civil Secretariat Gherao’ campaign. As the protesting daily wagers reached near below Gumat in the shape of a procession, the police stopped them (earlier they were stopped at canal head and jewel chowk) did not allow them to proceed further in view of Section 144 imposed in some locations of winter capital of state. However, the PDD daily wagers tried to break the police cordon while some to disrupt the usual traffic lay down infront of minibuses on the road. This resulted in road blockade forcing the police to resort to lathicharge to disperse the protestors resulting in the injuries to several daily wagers. “The government every year assures us to settle down our long pending demands but nothing comes in black and white”, a protesting PDD daily wager said. They said last year, the daily wagers were told that they would be regularized but it was merely eyewash and government was adopting same tactics this year too. ‘Not only regularization of employees but for the past three years, we have not been paid our salary, which is unfortunate’, the protesting daily wagers added. ‘The protestors were trying to disrupt the traffic movement and gherao the complex but due to the imposition of Section 144 CrPC in the city area, they were not allowed to proceed,’’ a senior police official told adding that police resorted to mild cane charge and use of water canon only when protestors despite the repeated warnings tried to march ahead by breaking the police cordon.
