J&K shivers, parts of Dal Lake freeze

Srinagar, Jan 1: Parts of world famous Dal Lake were again partially frozen near banks after the minimum temperature dipped further to minus 4.6 degrees Celsius second lowest during this winter.
Ponds and nullahs were also frozen in the valley, including those on the outskirts of the summer capital, Srinagar.People in the Kashmir Valley woke up to a chilly morning of the new year as the night temperature dipped to minus 4.6 degrees, about 3 degrees below normal. However, this was the second lowest after the summer capital witnessed coldest night on Christmas when the minimum dipped to minus 4.9 degrees.
This writer who visited the Dal Lake saw parts of the Lake in the interior were frozen. The water in the lake near banks between Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex to Cheshmashahi crossing was also partially frozen.
However, the frozen water started melting as the day progressed.
This was for the second time that parts of the Lake were partially frozen during this winter season.The Dal was frozen in 60s when a jeep, driven by a minister in former Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad Ministry, crossed the Lake in his jeep.
In 1986, it was frozen again and people, mostly children, were seen playing cricket and ice hockey on its surface. Then it also became a major tourist attraction.
The water taps were also frozen, affecting water supply in the city, particularly in the outskirts.
Youns Saleem a resident of Faizabad, Natipora said it took about 20 minutes to defreeze the frozen taps.Similar reports were also received from other parts of the city and its outskirts.
Minimum temperature in Pahalgam, base camp of holy Amarnath cave, dropped further to minus 7.3 degrees against yesterday's minus 7.2.The water taps, ponds and nullahs were frozen, reports reaching here said.Qazigund also in south Kashmir recorded minus 5.5 degrees followed by minus 5 at Kupwara in north Kashmir.People in Ladakh region continued to shiver with minimum between minus 18 to minus 27 degrees.
