| Pall of gloom grips Darhal after death of sepoy's wife, two minor children | | |
Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 02: A pall of gloom descended on the remote Thanamang hamlet of Darhal in Rajouri after the mysterious death of the wife of an army jawan and his two minor children, including a boy.Raqia Begum (30), her daughter Adeeba Kousar (11) and son Adnan (9) were found lying dead in their house while her another son Amdan (2)
was in unconscious condition, according to a police sources.Raqia's husband Mushtaq Ahmad -- a sepoy in JAK Li -- is at present posted at Uri in Kashmir. He had been informed of the tragedy, the sources added.
Sources said Raqia and her two children had either died of food poisoning or due to suffocation as the room windows and the ventilators were found shut. The chances of their having been poisoned to death by someone were also not ruled out, the sources added.
Sources said Mushtaq lived in a separate house while his father Abdul
Qayum lived in their nearby ancestral house. Raqia's sister, whose husband Bashir is a Forest Officer, lived in her neighbourhood, the sources added.
Sources said Bashir came to Qauym's house at about 3.30 pm and enquired about Raqia and her children. However, when Qayum told him that he had not seen them since morning, the duo went to Mushtaq's house to find out if everything was all right.
When despite repeated knocks at the entry door, no one turned up, they entered the house by scaling the wall. They then knocked at the door of the room which was bolted from inside. When no one responded, they broke open the door.
Finding the woman and children lying on the floor, they raised an alarm. More people came there who found that Raqia, Adeeba and Adnan were dead while Amdan was still breathing.Amdan was then shifted to Darhal hospital where his condition was
stated to be stable.
Sources said a police team led by Darhal police station SHO Yaqar Shaheen also reached the spot soon after the matter was brought to their notice.
When contacted, the SHO said all doors and ventilators of the room were shut and fire had also been burnt by the woman to keep themselves warm. He said it could also be a case of death due to suffocation. As all of them had vomitted, food-poisoning could be another possible reason, he added."It is also possible that someone poisoned them to death," Shaheen said and added that the bodies bore no external injury marks.
He said the exact reason of their death would be ascertained after post-mortem was done on the bodies and the report was made available to them. A special team of doctors from Rajouri district hospital would carry out the post-mortem tomorrow, he added.
The bodies were evacuated to the Darhal hospital at about 8 pm. The SHO said they had registered a case in this connection and started investigations.
