| Geoscientists stress for creating awareness about earthquake | | | JAMMU | OCT 7 The Jammu University Geology ALUMNI Association held general body meeting at University of Jammu to commemorate first anniversary of 2005 earthquake. The geoscientists form Geological Survey of India, Geology and Mining Department. Power Development Corporation, Central Ground Water Board, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, University of Jammu and its affiliated colleges discussed and deliberated upon the seismic hazard in northwest Himalaya vis-avis Jammu and Kashmir. The eminent geoscientists, including former Directors of Geological Survey of India, B.K.Raina, M.M.Munshi, Mohan Lal and Seva Das, Parvaiz Ahmad (PDC) and T.R.Sharma former HOD Geology University of Jammu emphasized on the need for microzonation of Jammu and Srinagar cities on priority basis. According to press release association adopted a resolution emphasizing the need for seismic monitoring of the fault lines in Jammu and Kashmir, Microzonation of Jammu city and Formulation of Disaster Management plan and building codes for the state. The Association also decided to form a core group of geoscientists from various organization to start generating geological data that would lead to microzonation of the Jammu city. The geoscientists stressed the need for generating awareness among the bureaucrats, p0oliticians, general citizenry and particularly the students at all the levels about the earthquake menace and preparedness. Dr. Madan Lal President of the Association applauded the efforts of the geoscientific community to create awareness among the general citizenry. He emphasized that Govt. should take advantage of this initiative in the larger interest of the society.
