Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 2- The 10- year old Sangeeta was on cloud nine all day through Saturday. For the first time in her life she felt privileged as she held seizure in her hand before inaugurating the class room constructed by Damodhar Satri Udyog Sanstha under project PAHL at Mohinder Nagar, Jammu.

The shy girl, dressed in red sweater was the VVIP on the occasion as all her class mates cheered her while she cut through the ribbon to enter their newly constructed class room.

Sangeeta, lost her mother while she was just five days old, was a rag picker and spent most of the time in streets collecting garbage from drains to make her ends meet.

These days she is inspiring children in her vicinity to take to learning and is a role model for many others in her company.

With the opening of the classroom equipped with modern teaching aids project PAHL has crossed yet another milestone in its long journey.

At least 99 students from different areas of New Mohinder Nagar are attending regular classes and have learnt social etiquettes in a short span of time. Before enrolling at Project PAHL, majority of these children were rag pickers and had never went to school.

The students show keen interest in different activities conducted under the Project PAHL.

Even though majority of children fall in the age group of 3-5 years of age efforts are on to introduce modern teaching aids including animated lectures, nursery rhymes, musical alphabets in the class room so that students are able to learn while they play.

Chairman of the Damodhar Satri Udyog Sanstha Onkar Nath Chandra said that after the opening of the modern class room the next step would be to equip the children's laboratory with computer.

“We are planning to use modern teaching aids to enable students to learn while they play”, he added.

For the purpose we are planning to start a short term module for the senior students to make them computer literate and develop their interest in the field, Chandra said.

He said that earlier, on the occasion of New Year also students enrolled in Project PAHL organized a simple function to usher in the New Year and celebrated the occasion in the company of their teachers and fellow class mates.
