Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 2: Signaling to add heat in political activities this summer, the lawyers associated with Jammu Bar Association today boycotted their court work and hit the streets in protest against report of Prime Minister’s fifth Working Group which recommends restoration of greater autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.
Burning effigies of the leaders of the coalition and renting slogans government, lawyers led by Bar president Sunil Sethi took out protest marches through various streets of the city. They described the report of the Working Group, headed Justice Sageer Ahmed, as Valley-centric and hurting the sentiments of people in Jammu. Threatening a sustained provincial level stir, the lawyers appealed to the Prime Minister to outrightly reject the recommendations of this ‘predatory’ report which is all-set to create a wedge between the two regions rather than doing some good.
Interestingly, the lawyers’ group clearly made attempts to discredit BJP and Panthers Party for, what it described, as these party’s failure to ‘raise voice of the people of Jammu’. A spokesman of the Bar Association said, “particularly, after flip-flop shows by BJP and JKNPP, the ball now seems in the court of Jammu lawyers”.
The lawyers assembled at City Chowk and condemned the report as totally anti-national and anti-Jammu. They have further charged that report is but an election manifesto of National Conference. The dubbed the report as totally pro-secessionist, anti-national and anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh and burnt copies of it in full public view. The speakers were highly critical of the ‘unoffered’ unflinching support of Congress President to the autonomy demand of National Conference. A major number of legislators of Congress belong to Jammu and it is highly unethical that its PCC chief advocates a report which runs in full face of the interests of Jammu people, said the speakers.
They said, “it seems that Soz is pursuing the agenda of National Conference. It is pertinent to add here that Soz had played an important role in forging the Congress alliance with NC. Rajinder Singh Jamwal demanded immediate resignation of Omar Abdullah and Saif-ud-din Soz.
In yet another significant development, reminiscing of the popular Durbar move, SAYSS agitation and CUAS agitations, led by Jammu lawyers, Bar Association has made a fervent appeal to all political and social organizations and the civil society of Jammu and Ladakh, for support against the Kashmir-centric designs of vested interests within the Central government.
Prominent among those addressed the lawyers and people assembled were Bar President, Sunil Sethi, Bar General Secretary, Rajesh Thappa, YLA President, Mohinder Pal Singh Palli, Leela Karan Sharma, ex-convenor, SAYSS, D.S. Saini, Anwar Choudhary and others
