| Cold wave intensifies | | |
Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 2: Cold wave intensified after the mercury dipped to minus 4.8 degrees celsius, three degree below normal, in the Kashmir valley where total power breakdown affected life. However, the maximum temperature was above normal, giving a bit respite to people from the night-long cold. Water taps, nullahs, ponds and parts of the world famous Dal Lake continued to freeze during the night defreezes. A weather office spokesman today told UNI that the minimum temperature recorded here was minus 4.8 degrees, against yesterday's minus 4.6 degrees. It was second coldest night as lowest so far was recorded on Christmas when the minimum dipped to minus 4.9 degrees. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest with minimum minus seven degrees followed by Pahalgam, the base camp of holy Amarnath cave in south Kashmir minus 6.9 degrees, Qazigund minus 5.5, Kupwara minus 4.8 degrees and Kokernag minus 2.8 degrees. Ladakh region also remained under the grip of severe cold with mercury recorded between minus 19 degrees to minus 27 degrees. |
