EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 3: After remaining in darkness for hours together due to tripping of the Northern Grid on Saturday night, the power supply in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir was partially restored early this morning.
The supply in three other neighbouring states viz Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh was also “partially” restored after engineers “successfully” rectified the technical snag erupted in the Northern Grid.
“About 90 per cent power supply has been restored in Jammu region while it would be activated in all other areas very soon. Our engineers and other technical staff are on their toes and they are scrutinising the whole situation,” Mohammad Qasim, Chief Engineer, PDD Jammu told Early Times.
Official sources said that the northern grid had again tripped at around 10 p.m on Saturday, adding “Earlier, tripping had occurred at 3.02 a.m. Saturday and power supply was restored after as many as seven hours of blackout.”
“Power supply in most parts of Jammu region was restored at around 6: 00 a.m this morning. The technical snag in 400 KV and 200 KV transmission lines providing power supply to Jammu and Kashmir from Northern Grid occurred to dense fog and industrial pollution and it was rectified after seven hours long exercise,” informed official sources.
The Chief Engineer said that power supply in different parts of the city got disrupted due to snag in local feeders and transformers, adding “Yet, we have restored 90 per cent of the power supply and remaining 10 per cent would be resumed very soon.”
Sources maintained that power supply to Kashmir Valley has also been partially resumed and if all goes well, it would be completely restored by tomorrow evening.
Meanwhile, foggy conditions followed by intermittent rains also affected normal movement of trains on Jammu-Delhi and other rail lines.
“Most of the trains were also delayed as they were running at very slow speed due to poor visibility. Many passengers were stranded at railway stations in this region,” said sources, adding “Five trains, both incoming and outgoing, were running five to six hours behind the scheduled timing.”
“Pooja Express was running five hours late and it reached around 1:00 p.m while Kranti Express and Jehlum were running six hours behind their scheduled timings. Garib Rath, which was scheduled to reach Jammu by 9:10 a.m, reached around 2:50 p.m on Jammu Railway Station. Archana Express was also running four and half hours late,” official sources said.
Besides, poor visibility due to dense fog also affected the aerial traffic and two flights could not land at Jammu Airport.
“Two flights, one of Spicejet and other of Go Air, could not land on Jammu Aiport due to poor visibility and they were landed at Srinagar Airport, subjecting passengers to great hardships,” maintained sources.
