1/3/2010 11:22:34 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 3: Breaking nearly three-month-long dry spell, the much-awaited rainfall in Jammu region on Sunday gave a significant relief to common man particularly farming community.
Official sources said that the region witnessed about 7.5 MM of rains, thus bringing cheers and optimism back on the farmers and people who have been reeling under cold waves for the past fortnight.
The city roads, however, today wore a deserted look with people preferring to remain indoors since early morning. “Due to intermittent rains since late last night, the normal temperature witnessed a considerable downfall and it plummeted to about 10 Degree Celsius,” official sources added.
The MeT department officials claimed that the rains would continue for next 24 hours and the normal temperature in the region would further fall. “People would continue to shivers under cold waves in view of intermittent rains that the region witnessed here today,” they informed.
“The upper reaches of the region would also witness snowfall in next few days which would further reduce the Maximum and Minimum temperature in the region,” Dr M K Khushu, a senior Weather Scientist at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu (SKUAST-J) said, adding that today’s rainfall have brought cheers and sanguinity among the farmers, who have been awaiting for rains for sowing early varieties of wheat since long.
Dhani Ram, a farmer at R S Pura, while expressing his joy over the rainfall, said “The farmers were disappointed with the prevailing dry spell and there were no rains in the region since September, 2008. If dry conditions would have continued, it would have created more troubles for the people.”
“Though the region has witnessed less rainfall, yet we are hopeful that it would help the farmers to sow wheat and other crops,” he said.
Official sources revealed that the Jammu and Kashmir have suffered an agricultural loss to the tune of Rs 405 crore due to continued dry spell thus far.
According to a senior Physician, the rains would give respite to the people from cough, cold, fever and other diseases related to cold.
Meanwhile, the upper reaches of Jammu region continued to reel under cold conditions with temperature plummeting several degrees below normal.
Official figures revealed, “The night temperature in Jammu city was recorded at 6.2 Degree Celsius while it dipped to 5.8 Degree Celsius at Katra, 5.0 Degree Celsius at Batote, 4.8 Banihal at one Degree Celsius at Bhaderwah
