| Year after lethal assault on his life, DyCM awaits progress in ‘probe’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 3: Is Jammu police strategically avoiding to investigate the case pertaining to alleged murderous attack on sitting Deputy Chief Minister and the then Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Tara Chand, during election campaign of last Assembly election? On December 22, 2008, late evening, when it was the last day of election campaign during VII and last phase of Assembly Polls 2008, some unidentified persons attempted an attack on Tara Chand and his supporters in Khour Block. Tara Chand, who was contesting from Chhamb Constituency on Congress mandate, was having door to door campaigning on the last day to woo the voters. Tara Chand and his supporters had a miraculous escape following swift and timely action by the escort of police and para-military personnel. Though Tara Chand and his party workers were safely driven from Khour village, the Personal Security Officers (PSOs) of Tara Chand managed to snatch a sharp edged weapon (Dah) from one of the accused persons, who managed to escape during the brawl. At that time, it was also learnt that there was a clash of workers of rival political parties. Highly placed sources informed that following that incident, one of the PSOs even visited at Police Station, Khour and showed the sharp-edged weapon and detailed the entire episode but the then Cops on duty did not take any cognizance. Taking a serious not of the same, Tara Chand lodged his protest to the then senior police officers to probe the incident and book the culprits under law. Highly placed sources further disclosed that at that time the recovered weapon was presented before the then Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, Manohar Singh, which was kept at Police Police Post, Canal Road and inquiry was initiated to ascertain the fact. Ironically, it is almost over a year has passed but so far the investigations have yet to be initiated to trace out the culprits. While none of the concerned senior police officers were available for comment, reliable sources indicated that even deputy chief minister Tara Chand has not been informed about the status of the investigation in to the said case. When police officers have failed to solve the case of alleged attack on the then sitting Speaker and presently Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, even after a gap of one year, how can one expect an early solution of cases lodged by commoners, quipped a police officer on the condition of anonymity. |
