Bankim Chandra Shastri (30), who was stated to be insomniac by his family members, had done his Ph.D. in Statistics from the Ujjain University in Madhya Pradesh. He had an excellent academic record. Quoting family members, police sources said Bankim was in depression for the past over two months and also suffered from insomnia. Only yesterday, he was taken by his father Som Nath Shastri -- a retired Government School Headmaster -- to a city's famed doctor at Gandhi Nagar and got examined, but the latter had diagnosed nothing adverse. As he was under depression, his father was keeping a close vigil on him. Last night, he asked him to sleep in his room. Sources said he felt uneasy whole night and got up at about 4 am, expressing the desire to take water. His father, who too had got up with him, went to the kitchen to bring water. However, when he came back, he found Bankim missing. Sources said before his father could understand anything, he saw smoke coming out of the store-room which was bolted from inside. When he broke open the door, he found his son in flames. Bankim had set himself afire by pouring kerosene oil on him. Sources said while trying to save his son by extinguishing the fire, Som Nath also sustained burns. The family then evacuated him to the GMC Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 10.30 am. He had sustained over 80 per cent burns. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to his family members for last rites. Police have registered a case in this connection. He joined JU about three months back. Earlier, he served as lecturer in a top Mumbai College and then in a Lucknow College. When contacted, Head of JU's Statistics Department, Prof J P Joorel said Bankim was a nice guy and he always enjoyed interactions with him.
