| BJP organizational polls deferred fourth time, no consensus yet | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 5: With the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) organisational elections deferred for the fourth time in the state and it now has been scheduled for January 9 to January 11, this has given rise to skepticism over the party’s credibility which has silently been vanished into the oblivion. If party insiders are to be believed, “consensus gap” among leaders of the party over the name of candidate for the post of state president forced the “Parliamentary Board” of party to postpone much-awaited elections in the state for fourth consecutive time. The elections to the post of state president were earlier scheduled for December 25 which was deferred for December 31 in the wake of “lack of consensus” over the name of candidate. It was further decided that the election would be held on January 4 but it was again deferred till January 7 following “groupism” and “rift” among senior leaders of the party. “Not much of the time has passed since the famous Amarnath Land row subsided in Jammu that gave a fair chance to the party to resurrect its fading glory, yet it failed to maintain its decorum-courtesy the infighting and groupism at galore within the cadre,” maintained party sources. A senior party leader seeking anonymity said, “The crowd of 11 MLAs in the party has made it to get dissected into various parts, each of it singing its own swan song. And the dearth of a capable leader to lead the party of national status is the primary apprehension that Sangh Parivar, too, is feeling right now.” “Initially, the name of four leaders viz Shamsher Singh, general secretary, Kavinder Gupta, Mayor Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Bali Bhagat, general secretary and Chander Prakash Ganga, vice president of the party were making rounds for the post of state president,” he disclosed. He further disclosed that the newly constituted Mandal and Block level units failed to arrive to any consensus over the name of Chander Prakash Ganga which paved way for young and two times winner from Nagrota constituency, Jugal Kishore Sharma to figure in the list of probables for the post of state president. “Now, only four candidates comprising Kavinder Gupta, Shamsher Singh, Bali Bhagat and Jugal Kishore Sharma are the front runners for this prestigious post,” he said. Sources, however, maintained that Mandal and Block levels units had refused to accept the dominance and groupism of three bigwigs of the party viz, Ashok Khajuria, Chaman Lal Gupta and Nirmal Singh. “After strong opposition by Mandal and Block level units of the party which were in favour of giving the responsibility of state chief to a young and prospective leader, the party decided to include Jugal Kishore Sharma in the list of probables and he seems to be strong contender for the post as he holds winning track record,” said sources. Besides, the senior party leader said that there is a clear direction to the BJP high command at Centre from Sangh to pursue for fresh and young incumbents for different posts. Interestingly, the party says that the elections have been postponed due to non-availability former Union Minister and in charge J&K affairs of the party, Shanta Kumar and Manohar Lal, central organizing secretary of the party. |
