A thick blanket of fog covered the city and its peripheries, besides some district headquarters, in the morning. Though patches of fog cleared by mid-morning when sun shone for a while, but the thick clouds of drops of waters regrouped once the sun disappeared. With sun nowhere in picture and icy winds sweeping the region, mercury dipped further. Higher reaches, which experienced fresh snowfall today, also continued reeling under severe cold conditions, making the life hell for the people living there. The prevailing cold conditions have brought down the temperatures drastically both in plains and hilly regions. Chill persisted throughout the day with icy winds adding to it. Several trains destined for Jammu and leaving Jammu were running late by several hours due to intense fog. Poor visibility also hampered vehicular traffic across the region. People could be seen plying vehicles at snail's pace as the windscreens fogged, making driving difficult. Official sources said as the higher reaches in Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Ramban, Banihal, Udhampur, Rajouri and Poonch experienced fresh snowfall, several remote places in these areas were cut off from the main roads. However, adequate quantity of ration and other eatables had already been stored at all these places before the onset of winter, the sources added. The Trikuta Hills, housing the world-famous holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra, experienced season's first snowfall Monday. Jammu today experienced maximum temperature of 12.9 degrees and a minimum of 5.5 degrees. Met department officials said the mercury was likely to dip further in the region. In the city, people could be seen wearing heavy woollens, woollen caps and gloves to keep the cold away. As the fury of the biting wind continued agonising citizens, showing no signs of receding, some private school administrations decided to extend their winter vacations for pre-nursery to 2nd class students till January 14. The schools were to open Wednesday. An official announcement in this regard was also likely to be made by the government, the sources added. As the Jammu-Srinagar highway became through esterday after remaining closed for a day on Monday, several tourists today thronged the famous tourist resort of Patnitop which is covered by a white sheet of snow. Some more tourists from Punjab, New Delhi, Gujarat and Mumbai were likely to reach there in days to come. |
