Director disputes Health Minister’s opinion on sexual harassment charges
1/6/2010 11:25:43 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 6: In sharp contradiction with the statement of Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma that Medical Superintendent, Gandhi Nagar Hospital, Dr Vinod Gupta has been posted back to hospital after being given “clean chit” by the inquiry committee probing allegations of “physical harassment” leveled by four lady doctors, Director Health Services Jammu, Jasbir Singh has something different to say.
“We have not given him clean chit as nothing in black and white has come out yet as far as the findings of inquiry committee is concerned,” Dr Jasbir Singh told Early Times.
It may be mentioned here that as per the reported statement of Minister for Health, Dr Vinod Gupta has been posted back to Gandhi Nagar hospital after issued warnings for keeping good behaviour and discipline. The Minister had said that the charge of physical or any type of sexual harassment could not be proved against him as leveled by four lady doctors of the same hospital. “The Committee had indicted Dr Vinod Gupta for his rude and arrogant behaviour,” the Minister had claimed.
On being asked about the media reports that Dr Vinod Gupta was posted back in the hospital, Jasbir Singh categorically said, “We have not given him clean chit.” He, however, evaded some other queries, saying he was busy in Civil Secretariat.
When contacted, Sham Lal Sharma was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, the four lady doctors have accused the Health Department of “hushing up” the case as they have not been furnished the copies of the inquiry report findings.
“Four days back, we have submitted an application seeking the findings of inquiry report in black and white. So far, the department has not provided us the copies and it seems that the dilly dallying tactics are being adopted to hush up the case,” said a lady doctor, who wished not to be named.
The lady doctors also disclosed that they would fight this struggle legally if the inquiry report findings were not furnished to them in a day or two. “On what grounds, he has been given clean chit. We want the findings of the inquiry committee report,” the lady doctor questioned.
It may be mentioned here that four lady doctors had lodged a written complaint against Medical Superintendent of Gandhi Nagar Hospital, Dr Vinod Gupta for alleged physical and mental harassment on September 8 last year. They had sought stern action against the Medical Superintendent under law of the land and sought guarantee for their safety from the HoD and the Minister concerned at their work place.
Later, the lady doctors had also alleged that the Medical Superintendent was threatening them to get them transferred away from Jammu if they did not respond to his dictates.
After the written complaints of the lady doctors, the Health Department had constituted a inquiry committee headed by Deputy Director Health, Dr Vijay Gupta and comprising members, Shahid Mughal (CMO), Dr Anita Sharma and Dr Renu.
