2009 witnesses least violence in 20 years

The year 2009 witnessed less number of violence-related happenings in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the last 2 decades.
DGP Kuldeep Khoda also said that since 1990, the number of murders, terrorist activities and bombings have declined in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per official records, in the year 2009, around 72 security personnel lost their lives and 79 citizens were victimized in violence-related happenings.
Civilian murders dropped by more than 42% during 2009 when judged against with that in 2008. On the other hand insurgency-related happenings went down by a rate of more than 35%, as stated by Khoda.
The year 2008 witnessed around 708 insurgency-related happenings whereas 85 security officials and 147 citizens lost their lives.
Official figures show that in 1995 around 5,946 nsurgency-related happenings were registered in which 1,596 terrorists, 1,202 citizens and 237 security personnel were killed.
