Police tighten belts to thwart militant designs

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Jan 7: Apparently trying to take advantage of the foggy weather conditions, the incursion bids by the militants from across the border have suddenly increased for the past few days.

This swift upsurge in infiltration bids has alerted the Jammu district police and compelled it to enhance the security ring in and around city so as to avoid any untoward incident ahead of Republic Day.

Militants, who are desperately trying to show their presence in the state after receiving some major jolts during last year, have again up their ante. They have demonstrated their intent by executing the first Fidayeen (suicide) attack on January 6 after more than two years at Srinagar’s historic Lal Chowk, said official sources

With Lohri festival and Republic Day are approaching near, the terrorist outfits may try to strike here also.

According to sources, there are reports that militants who could manage to sneak into Indian territory might take refuge in the residential areas of city posing as tenants with fake identities.

To scuttle the moves of the militants, the police have issued an advisory to Jammuites to substantiate the credentials of the tenants before giving them the accommodation on rent and also verify the identities of those already putting up as tenants in their houses.

Since the police do not want to take any chances, it is on its tenterhooks and maintaining maximum vigilance to foil the nefarious designs of anti-national elements, said a senior police officer wishing anonymity.

In order to ensure a fool proof security set up, police have started an exercise wherein list of outsiders putting up in different areas particularly those in the vicinity of the Republic Day parade venue Maulana Azad Stadium is being prepared.

Special instructions have been issued to the concerned police stations to depute policemen, who would visit the localities and record the minute details of the tenants from the house owners.

The police officer said that the localities surrounding the Republic Day parade venue are being sensitized and the security in other areas of city and outskirts has also been beefed up.

Though strict vigil is being maintained within the city by the security agencies but still the particulars of the persons, either outsider or resident of the state, who are putting up here cannot be ignored due to threat perception, he added

The police officer said that people should co-operate the police in providing vital information about the strangers living in their localities as it sometimes help in avoiding an untoward incident.

As people overlook and do not record the details of a new arrival, it provides a perfect alibi to anti-national and subversive elements, he said.
