| ‘Govt to oppose WB disclaimer on J&K’ | | | Early Times Report New Delhi Jan 7: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has assured a delegation of Jammu and Kashmir members of parliament that the government will oppose a disclaimer clause inserted by the by World Bank in return for a US$160 million loan it has approved for a development project in the state.
The World Bank has asked state government to give an undertaking that the loan would not be treated as a certificate that the “disputed territory” was an integral part of India reports The Economic Times of India. India had similarly encountered problems over the territory when China blocked an Asian Development Bank loan for Arunachal Pradesh seeking to defer the loan as it was a “disputed territory.”
The Indian Minister for Jammu and Kashmir, Altaf Mian, said that the World Bank had already funded two projects in Jammu and Kashmir with no disclaimers attached although the loan component was much smaller.
Last year, India refused to agree to a proposed Asian Development Bank loan after China urged that the loan be approved without acknowledging the state as a part of India. China has made claims on all of Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Kashmir as part of Tibet thus part of Chinese territory. |
